Plumber license requirements in Texas.
Texas licenses plumbing at the state level through the Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners. The board runs a four-tier ladder — apprentice, tradesman plumber-limited, journeyman, and master — and a plumbing business must be qualified by a Responsible Master Plumber. Licenses renew annually.
What Texas requires.
Plumber’s Apprentice
Registers with the board and works under the supervision of a licensed plumber while building hours.
Tradesman Plumber-Limited
Works on one- and two-family dwellings under the supervision of a Responsible Master Plumber. Requires a TSBPE-approved 24-hour training course or a US Department of Labor–approved apprenticeship.
Journeyman Plumber
Full residential and commercial plumbing work. Requires at least 8,000 documented hours of plumbing experience plus the required training, then the journeyman exam.
Master Plumber
The top credential and the one that can qualify a plumbing business as a Responsible Master Plumber (RMP).
Getting the Plumber’s Apprentice
- Tradesman Plumber-Limited: a TSBPE-approved 24-hour training course or a US DOL–approved apprenticeship, then the exam
- Journeyman: at least 8,000 hours of documented plumbing experience plus required training, then the journeyman exam
- Master: hold a journeyman license, then meet the board’s journeyman experience requirement before the master exam — reduced from four years to two years effective September 1, 2025
- A plumbing company must be qualified by a Responsible Master Plumber (RMP)
Renewal: Annually, with six hours of continuing professional education required for every licensee.
